Short flights add up faster than people expect
Stairs are the slowest carpet in any house. Each tread, riser and nosing is worked by hand with a small tool rather than the floor wand, so a flight takes far longer per square foot than an open bedroom does.
That is why they are priced separately and honestly: $6 a step with an $85 minimum per staircase. A split-level with three short flights of five or six steps is still three staircases of hand work, so it is worth counting them before you call rather than being surprised by the quote.
Older broadloom, and the chemistry that suits it
Carpet from this era is often a wool blend, and a good deal of it is still down. It behaves differently from modern synthetic: it holds more water, dries slower, and reacts badly to the alkaline pre-spray that is standard on polyester.
So it is cleaned with an acidic-side rinse on its own, and dried with more airflow rather than more heat. The result is a carpet that comes up clean and stays soft instead of going crunchy, which is the usual complaint after wool has been cleaned with the wrong chemistry.
