In plain English

Carpet cleaning has its own vocabulary, and most of it is on this page. Here is what those words actually mean — and what happens if you decide to book.

Steam cleaning, or hot water extraction

Two names for the same thing. Hot water and cleaning solution go into the carpet under pressure, and a vacuum pulls them straight back out, bringing the dirt with them. There is no actual steam involved.

250 PSI

The water pressure at the wand — the tool that touches your carpet. More pressure pushes the solution deeper into the pile and pulls more soil back out of it.

IICRC-trained

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification is the body that sets the training standard for this trade. Kharl is trained to its Water Damage Restoration Technician standard, the WRT. That training is about water, so on carpet and upholstery what he brings is over six years of doing the work.

Why we keep mentioning pH

The pre-spray is strongly alkaline, which is what breaks down ground-in dirt. The rinse afterwards is mildly acidic, which cancels it out. Skip the rinse and the leftover soap stays in the carpet and turns sticky — that is why carpet can look dirty again a fortnight after it was cleaned.

What happens if you book

  1. You call or text 437-873-3116. Tell us which rooms. You get a price on that call — nobody has to visit first, because every rate is published on this page.
  2. We agree a time. Same-day and next-day are often available. Same-day carries a $50 priority surcharge; next-day does not. What limits us is the calendar, not the room rates.
  3. We turn up and do the work. Light furniture moved, carpet pre-sprayed, cleaned, then rinsed so nothing is left behind. Kharl does the job himself.
  4. You use the room the same day. Dry to the touch in four to six hours, fully dry within twenty-four. If you are not happy, the re-clean is free.

Why stairs wear out faster than any other carpet in the house.

Carpeted stairs take more abuse per square foot than almost any other surface in a home. Every step down involves a small amount of grinding and twisting motion as a foot lands and pushes off, which drives dirt and grit deeper into the pile with each pass. That is very different from the even, straight-line contact carpet gets in an open living room. That's why stair treads are so often the first place visible wear shows up, even in homes where the rest of the carpet still looks nearly new. Hallways see a similar concentrated-traffic effect, especially narrow connector hallways between bedrooms that funnel all foot traffic through a tight strip of carpet.

Because of this, we treat each stair tread and riser individually during cleaning rather than running one pass over the whole staircase. This lets us apply proper dwell time and extraction to each step. It matters because the front edge of a stair tread holds more embedded soil than the back of the same step. That edge takes the most direct pressure from a footstep landing. A single quick pass over an entire staircase tends to miss this, which is part of why stairs cleaned with lower-powered or rushed methods often still look dull along the leading edge of each step even right after cleaning. It is the one thing worth asking carpet cleaners for stairs before booking: whether every tread is treated on its own, or the staircase is done in a single pass.

How pricing works for stairs and hallways.

Stairs are priced per step rather than as a flat staircase fee, since a 12-step staircase and a 20-step staircase involve meaningfully different amounts of work. Hallways work the other way: one flat rate of $45 per hallway, whatever its length or width. There is nothing to measure and no size tier to disagree about — the number in the estimator is the number on the invoice. Both are easy to bundle onto a whole-home carpet cleaning booking as an add-on, which is how most of our customers book them. It's rare for someone to book stair cleaning entirely on its own, though we're happy to do that if it's all that's needed.

Why safety matters more here than anywhere else.

Stairs come with real safety considerations that flat carpet doesn't. Hoses and equipment cords have to be managed carefully to avoid creating a trip hazard mid-job. Treads have to be dried thoroughly and evenly before anyone walks on them again, because a damp stair tread is genuinely more slippery than a damp flat surface. Kharl works methodically top-to-bottom or bottom-to-top depending on the staircase layout, and he's especially careful in homes with young kids or pets who might not understand to stay off freshly cleaned steps. If there's a landing or turn in the staircase, we treat that area with the same care as the straight runs, since landings often see even more concentrated wear than a standard step.

Keeping stairs looking better between cleanings.

Because stairs wear faster than flat carpet, they benefit from more frequent attention between professional cleanings. A quick vacuum of stair treads once a week — focusing on the front edge of each step where soil concentrates most — makes a real difference. Stair treads are also a common spot for pet accidents to go unnoticed for a while, since they're less visible than a stain in the middle of a living room floor. It's worth a periodic visual check if you have pets. If you notice one or two specific steps wearing faster than the rest, mention it during booking so we can give those areas a little extra attention. It's common near the top or bottom of a staircase, where turning motion adds extra stress.

Frequently asked.

Why do stairs cost more per square foot than a bedroom?

Stairs take significantly longer to clean properly — each step is treated individually, and Kharl works around railings and tight corners that don't exist in an open room.

Can you clean stairs and hallways in the same visit as other rooms?

Yes — most customers bundle stairs and hallways into the same appointment as their carpet cleaning. Add them directly in our online price estimator to see your combined total.

Do you clean carpet runners on hardwood stairs?

Yes, we clean carpet runners the same way we clean full stair carpet — treating each visible step individually.

Stair Carpet, Mid-Clean

A staircase part-way through, with the extraction wand still in frame. Stairs are the hardest-worn carpet in most homes and the slowest to clean properly, because each tread and riser is done by hand rather than in a straight pull. That is why they are quoted separately: $6 a step with an $85 minimum per staircase.

A thirteen-step flight works out to $78 on the per-step rate, so the $85 minimum applies instead. Local examples are in the Brampton, Milton and Georgetown guides.
