Two names for the same thing, and a few more in circulation: people ask for steam cleaning services, or a carpet wash service, and mean this. Hot water and cleaning solution go into the carpet under pressure, and a vacuum pulls them straight back out, bringing the dirt with them. There is no actual steam involved. Carpet shampooing is a different method, not another name for it.

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification is the body that sets the training standard for this trade. Kharl is trained to its Water Damage Restoration Technician standard, the WRT. That training is about water, so on carpet and upholstery what he brings is over six years of doing the work.
The pre-spray is strongly alkaline, which is what breaks down ground-in dirt. The rinse afterwards is mildly acidic, which cancels it out. Skip the rinse and the leftover soap stays in the carpet and turns sticky — that is why carpet can look dirty again a fortnight after it was cleaned.

What hot water extraction actually does.
Hot water extraction — sometimes called "steam cleaning," though no actual steam is involved — is the method recommended by nearly every major carpet manufacturer, and it's central to the carpet cleaning services we provide on every job.
Hot water mixed with a cleaning solution is forced deep into the carpet fibres under pressure, breaking down oils, dirt, and dust that a vacuum can't reach because it's sitting well below the visible surface. Immediately after, a powerful vacuum pulls that same water back out to remove dirt and residue before it has a chance to resettle. The result is a carpet that's actually clean at the fibre level, not just refreshed on top.
This matters because a lot of the soiling in a carpet isn't visible dirt at all — it's oily residue from foot traffic, skin cells, and airborne particles that settle into the fibres over months and bind to them chemically. Dry cleaning methods and store-bought carpet shampooers generally can't break that bond. They clean the surface layer and leave the embedded soil behind.

We also test carpet fibre type before starting any job, since it changes the approach. Nylon and polyester — the most common synthetic fibres in newer GTA homes — tolerate higher water temperatures and stronger solutions well.
Wool and wool-blend carpet, more common in older or higher-end homes, is more delicate and can shrink or felt if treated too aggressively, so we lower the water temperature and adjust dwell time accordingly. Getting this step right is the difference between a carpet that looks and feels the same after cleaning, and one that comes out looking slightly "off."
What affects your price.
Our pricing is itemized by room type, not a flat per-visit fee, which means a one-bedroom condo and a five-bedroom house are priced fairly differently rather than getting charged the same call-out rate.
A few other factors can affect the final quote. Carpet with heavy pet staining or odour typically needs our enzyme treatment as an add-on. Very heavily soiled carpet may need an extra pre-treatment pass — move-out cleans, or homes that haven't been professionally cleaned in years. And furniture that has to be moved out of the way can add time, depending on how much there is.

How often carpet actually needs cleaning.
The often-cited rule of thumb is every 12-18 months for an average household, but the right interval depends heavily on your specific situation. Homes with pets, young children, or anyone with allergies or asthma generally benefit from cleaning closer to every 6-12 months, since carpet acts as a filter that traps allergens, pet dander, and dust until it's professionally extracted.
High-traffic areas tend to show wear and soiling faster than bedrooms or formal living rooms: hallways, stairs, the strip in front of the sofa. That is why some homeowners clean the high-traffic zones more often than the rest of the home.

This is the part of carpet ownership almost nobody is told at the point of sale, and it is worth knowing before you decide to put a clean off for another year. The major manufacturers do not merely recommend professional cleaning — they require it, and they require a particular kind.
Mohawk requires professional hot water extraction at least every 18 months from the date of purchase, using cleaning products or systems that carry the Carpet & Rug Institute Seal of Approval. It asks you to keep the invoice as proof. Their warranty documentation is explicit that failing to do so voids coverage.
Shaw specifies hot water extraction as the only method it approves, and recommends the work be done by an IICRC-certified firm using CRI Seal of Approval products. It sets a floor of once every 24 months, while recommending every 12 to 18. Both treat a do-it-yourself rental as something other than a professional clean.
Where we stand against that: hot water extraction is the only method we use, and we finish every carpet with Prochem All Fiber Rinse, which carries the Carpet & Rug Institute Seal of Approval. What we will not do is tell you your warranty is safe on our word. Terms differ by manufacturer, by product line and by year of purchase. Shaw's wording also asks for a certified firm rather than a certified technician, which is a distinction worth reading your own paperwork for.
